At first look, Veere Di Wedding reveals four women friends who want to explore the world at their own pace. All four girls are well educated and hail from rich modern families. They live life as per their own decisions. They wear designer outfits, sleep with make-up on, smoke and drink, and are not coy about sex or spewing cuss words. And live in a bubble that is perfect consumerist heaven for product placements. There are familiar clichés to tick — broken, dysfunctional family, token gay uncle, a “lesbo” joke, body image issues, caricaturized and loud middle-class West Dilliwalas, a mandatory foreign trip, predictable twists and turns and a neat, ‘all is well’ resolution.

The movie has enough space for the straight guys, the not-so-straight ones, the married ones, the single ones, the to-be-divorced ones, the slim ones, the plus-size ones and they all fit in so organically together that for over two hours you are glued to the big screen.

Veere Di Wedding revolves around four childhood friends Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Avni (Sonam Kapoor), Sakshi (Swara Bhaskar) and Meera (Shikha Talsania) — who get together in Delhi to celebrate the wedding of Kalindi and her beau Rishab Malhotra (Sumeet Vyas).

What follows is a mad-capped few days as the wedding preparation takes its toll on all those involved and we are left grappling with the aftermath. Veere Di Wedding is more than a chick flick for sure despite the fact that the antics of the four friends and their sartorial is what keeps us entertained throughout. But there is enough gravitas wherever required and all in all you come out feeling as if you’ve got a peek into each of their respective lives with all its complexities. Veere perfectly balances out the laugh-out-moments with the real life issues each of the characters are grappling with. Nowhere does it sag or go over the top with the emotions.

Kudos to the casting director for a superb job. Despite the fact that Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor are the big names here both Swara and Shikha have well etched roles and they share equal screen space with the other two. Most importantly each of the actresses bring their own unique talent to the fore and nowhere do we get the feeling one is more prominent than the others.

Veere is the perfect movie for a girls’ day out and is bound to make you laugh as well as bond over common issues. Sonam specially aces in her role as the desperate-to-get hitched hot shot lawyer. Not to be left behind by Swara Bhaskar whose ‘on-the-verge-of-divorce’ character gives feminism a new dimension and the perfectly cast Shikha who holds her own in such stalwart company. Let’s not forget Kareena who gets enough chance to show both her comic side as well as her dramatic chops. Even the side actors do an excellent job that they seem plucked straight from Delhi society to the big screen.

What made Akshay Opt-out?

“Akshay has some concerns over the script that director Subhash Kapoor has greenlit. He requested that a few things be rewritten. But, Subhash was adamant,” mid-day quoted a source. The difference of creative opinions led the actor to change his mind and drop out of the film.However, Mogul was set to release next year as per the first poster of the film. But now it is speculated that Akshay might give out his dates to other producers as he has a free slot on his roster.

The superstar has worked with the Mogul director Subhash Kapoor in the courtroom drama, Jolly LLB 2. Akshay featured in the movie as a struggling lawyer from Lucknow. We wonder what went wrong with the talented actor-director duo collaboration.

Earlier, Tulsi, Gulshan Kumar’s daughter told PTI that Akshay is the best-suited actor for the role. She exclaimed, “There are a lot of similarities between Akshay and my father. Akshay is a Punjabi and so are we. He is Delhi-based and my dad was also from Delhi. I think he would be able to pull off the character.”

Akshay’s Upcoming Films

Leaving aside Mogul, Akshay Kumar will be seen in Rajinikanth’s 2.0 which is set to release in April. Apart from this, he is currently shooting for Padman, which also stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor in the leads.

Therefore, the actor has some good projects in his kitty. We wish all gets sorted and the actor resumes working for Mogul.
