Fortis holds walkathon on Organ Donation

Fortis Hospital, Mohali today held a walkathon to spread awareness on organ donation.

The nursing staff of the hospital went around the hospital premises holding placards having messages encouraging organ donation among the visitors.

Today marks the completion of 25 years since the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, which was passed in the parliament in 1994. Silver Jubilee celebrations were planned to highlight this landmark in the field of organ donation and transplantation.

The hospital staff joined this walkathon to pledge their support for this noble cause. Mr. Ashish Bhatia COO (North and East) Fortis Healthcare Ltd and Mr. Abhijit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Mohali, joined the initiative.

One can continue to live in this world even after death by donating body organs to the needy and it’s the only donation which can make you immortal,” said Mr. Abhijit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Mohali. A single donor can save several lives by donating the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and small bowel. By donating organs and tissues, a single donor can potentially save and enrich more than 25 persons.

Mr. Ashish Bhatia COO – North & East, Fortis Healthcare said, “There is a widening chasm between the demand of organs for people at end stages and their availability. Adding to the complexity is the lack of awareness, simultaneously surrounded by superstitions which present themselves as the key obstacles.  Donating organs is a humanitarian cause that will gain momentum with increasing awareness in society. At Fortis, we will continue to contribute as much as we can by educating people and saving more and more lives. This walkathon is a reminder that each one of us has more to give.”

Prominent among others who participated in the walkathon included Dr. Sunil Kumar, Consultant, Organ Transplant; Dr. GBS Kang, Medical Director; Dr. Amit Sharma, Consultant Nephrology; Dr. HJS Gill, Senior Consultant, Nephrology, while the transplant team included Captain Neelam Deswal, Nursing Superintendent; Dr. Bhavna Ahuja, Medical Superintendent and Jaspreet Kaur, Head Admin.
